Luminous Duality: The Artistic Vision of Le Xi

Light and shadow form the foundation of my creative practice. They not only represent themselves, but also embody opposing perspectives. This oppositional relationship is not limited to the visual realm, but is profoundly entrenched in our modes of perception and conduct, existing even in the subtle tension between being and becoming.

In my works, I strive to create a space where these opposing forces can coexist, though this coexistence is fragile. I am drawn to the use of reflective materials, which allows me to achieve a sense of singularity and wholeness simultaneously. This focus on reflective materials is closely related to my sensitivity to the changes in light and shadow. I am interested in exploring extreme differences, juxtaposing seemingly contradictory elements to create an aesthetic ambiguity. "Light and shadow" become a gateway for me to explore the broader dichotomies, as the interweaving of opposites generates a rich tension and dynamism.

Le Xi, Shovel the Snow in the North, 01:12(Loop), video, dimensions variable, silent, 2020

The work "Shovel the Snow in the North" stems from my relentless pursuit to transcend my own limitations. I'm particularly drawn to the pure play of light and shadow on the snowy ground, and I began to focus on uncovering the poetic moments hidden within the monotony of everyday life, capturing subtle self-contradictions. I noticed that the repetitive task of shoveling snow is linked to the destiny of breaking free from our self-imposed constraints. I started to document my own behavior, repeatedly shoveling away the shadows I cast on the pristine snow in the northern winters. This repetitive action always leaves me struggling to escape the inner turmoil. It can be seen as both my personal "self-portrait" and a "self-portrait" of all, aiming to seek and validate the unique and irreplicable moments in our lives. Through this work, I hope to present the multifaceted aspects of human existence and inspire the viewer to ponder and explore the essence of life.

The unity in the contrast of light and shadow is a crucial source of inspiration for my creative practice, as well as a window for me to reflect on the fundamental nature of life. Whenever I see the sunrise outside the window, I'm filled with excitement, as if I can embark on a mysterious journey with no destination or time limit. These subtle shifts in light and shadow seem to break through the spatial and temporal constraints of ordinary existence, allowing me to sense the wonder and poetry of the universe. I hope my artworks can also enable viewers to transcend the everyday and share in this transformative experience.
